Industrial Design Human Capital Development Program

About the Program

This program looks to build Uganda’s Industrialization, implemented in two ways, one is through skilling local artisans who are already producing items to elevate their skills so they can now be able to produce products that can compete favourably on the international market. The other is a scholarship for a Diploma in Industrial Design, students have access to full time residence at our campus in Busiika.

Initiated by SASA College of Industrial Design in partnership with the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation, the Human Capital Development Program addresses a major challenge for Uganda’s workforce.

While local welders, carpenters, tailors, and shoemakers produce exceptional daily craftsmanship, many remain constrained by outdated designs that limit their earning potential and restrict enterprise growth. Operating Monday through Friday at Trinity Mall in Katwe where most of these artisans are based, this hands-on initiative equips local artisans with modern industrial design principles.
By combining traditional trade skills with functional design, ergonomic finishing, and product development, the program transforms raw craftsmanship into high-value, market-ready goods built to command premium prices locally and internationally.

How It Creates Impact

Value Addition & Modernization

Shifts local artisans away from low-margin, repetitive production by teaching core industrial design principles, material selection, and modern aesthetic finishing.

Economic Scaling & Market Access

Enables grassroots technical workers to produce refined, export-ready goods that compete effectively in higher-tier local and global markets.

Bridging Informal & Formal Sectors

Integrates informal workshop trade skills with formal industrial design standards, creating sustainable business models for local creators.
