Bridging The Gap

We started with a single, pressing question: Why are so many talented graduates struggling to find work?

After years of researching the gap between traditional higher education and the real world needs of employers, we realized that the “old way” of teaching wasn’t cutting it. Students were graduating with theories, but the industry was looking for creators and problem-solvers.

We decided to build the school we wish we had

Since opening our doors, our goal hasn't been to just hand out certificates. We’ve built a place where you spend less time memorizing textbooks and more time in the workshop. We ensure that by the time you graduate, you don’t just have a diploma but possess the actual skills to walk into a company and start contributing on day one.

Proscovia joined the programme with something very personal in mind: finishing the home she had started building and being able to care for her father.

Her journey had already taken her through teenage motherhood, a difficult marriage and an attempt to start over abroad.

Through the Dignifying Jobs for Women in Construction program, she gained practical skills and graduated with renewed determination to work towards the life she wanted.

But just a few months after her graduation, Proscovia lost her father.

Some stories do not have the ending we hope for. But they can still show us the strength it takes to keep building.

Last Friday, trainees under SASA College`s Human Capital Development in Industrial Design Program visited Kiira Motors, one of Africa’s premier vehicle assembling plants 🚘

One of the key reasons was to explore possibilities of producing for markets beyond the Ugandan boarders.

The visit was about more than seeing how cars are assembled. It was about opening their minds to what becomes possible when craftsmanship is accompanied by industrial design, structured manufacturing processes, quality standards and professionalism.

Many of Uganda’s artisans have the skills to produce useful, high-quality products. But without the right manufacturing processes, product development knowledge and routes to larger markets, that potential can remain limited.

At Kira Motors, our trainees were able to see what production at a larger scale looks like, not only in the products being assembled, but in the systems, standards and professional practices behind them.

Industrial design is about helping people move from “I can make this” to “I can design and produce this for a market.”

That is the kind of thinking we are building through the Human Capital Development Program.
